The Holy Quran in the Qaloun Reading of Nafi'

The Qaloun riwaya is one of the two transmissions of Imam Nafi' ibn Abi Nu'aym al-Madani, one of the seven readers of the Quran; the other is Warsh. Qaloun — 'Isa ibn Mina al-Madani — was Nafi's stepson and closest student, staying with him for twenty years until he became the most reliable transmitter of his reading. The name "Qaloun" came from Nafi' himself: a word of Greek origin meaning "excellent".

This is the reading used in Tunisia and Libya, as well as parts of Egypt and Qatar. That is why the printed mushaf in this riwaya is sought under the name "Madani mushaf", after Medina, the home of both Nafi' and Qaloun. It is transmitted today by way of Abu Nushayt, the path carried by the Shatibiyya.
